we took some inspiration from these music videos when making ours, especially the Eric Prydz 'call on me' video. There were a lot of fast shots of the dancers in the gym, we tried to incorperate this too moving between our narrative and performance and different angles and shots of the dancers. close ups were also incorperated a lot in the 'call on me' we also used these a lot too, of the dancers faces and body parts such as bums and legs. We also used bright costumes like in the 'call on me' video, as we thought this contributed well to the mise en scene and genre of music.
It was hard for us to extrapolate conventions from House Rulez as they only had the one music video for us to look at, which is shown above. So for a lot of the time we had to look deeply in to the materiel we had and try and improvise our own ideas to what we thought would fit with the House Rulez band image. One thing we definitely noticed being associated with them is bright colours which we feel we definitely used a lot not just in our video but in our digipak and website too, keeping it a constant theme.
we developed these conventions by taking it a step further and editing in flashes of bright colours through the dancing part of the video. we also editted certain things to fit with the beat of the music, for example at the beginning of the video alice flashes out of site as she walks across the room with the boom box, at this point there is a 'whoosh' in the music which gives the idea of her dissapearing off camera. in 'call on me' the whole video was mainly performace and it is in the gym the whole time, but we decided to include a clear narrative as well as the performance.
we challeneged these conventions at the same time, through the use of our dad narrative, as this is not typically seen in a music video, but we feel this worked well for us and we evn managed to create humour which is hard to do without dialouge. so we feel we did the right thing in challenging the typical convention of using only performance in dance music videos.
